A Celebrant’s Guide to a Joyful Naming Ceremony

Posted by Dee

As a celebrant, I’ve had the joy of presiding over naming ceremonies—each one unique, heartfelt, and occasionally featuring an enthusiastic toddler heckler. If you're planning a naming day for your little one (or even for yourself—new names deserve a celebration too!), here’s how to make it meaningful, memorable, and just a little bit fun.

Why Have a Naming Ceremony?

A naming ceremony is a wonderful way to:

  • Officially introduce a child to their village (aka your collection of family and friends).
  • Perhaps you've chosen a new name and want to celebrate it with your loved ones. Or maybe you've remarried and wish to give your children a new family name.
  • Make heartfelt promises to your little one (that they’ll totally hold you to in their teenage years).
  • Celebrate without the need for religious formalities—just pure love and joy.
  • Provide an excuse for cake. (Honestly, who needs more reason than that?)

How to Plan a Naming Ceremony (Without Losing Your Sanity)

1. Choose the Perfect Spot

A naming ceremony can take place anywhere—a cozy garden, a community hall, or even your living room. Outdoor ceremonies are magical but remember: weather is like a toddler—unpredictable and prone to tantrums.

2. Appoint a Celebrant!

You’ll need someone to guide the ceremony, whether it’s a professional celebrant (we come with experience and a sense of humour!) or that one relative who loves holding the microphone.

3. The Name Reveal – Cue the Dramatic Pause

The big moment! Share why you chose this name—maybe it’s a family tradition, maybe you just liked how it sounded with your last name, or maybe it was the only one you and your partner could agree on.

4. Add Personal Touches

  • Readings & Poems – These can be heartfelt or humorous.
  • Symbolic Gestures – Light a candle, plant a tree, or create a time capsule filled with well wishes.
  • Guide parents/Supporting Adults – These are the people who’ll be there to offer wisdom, support, and occasional babysitting duties. Choose wisely.

5. Celebrate with Style

Once the official part is done, it's time to eat, drink, and take too many photos. If all else fails, hand out snacks—because nothing gathers a crowd like free food!

Final Thoughts from Your Celebrant

A naming ceremony is not just about a name—it’s about family, love, and setting the tone for a beautiful future. Whether your ceremony is big or small, make it meaningful, make it fun, and most importantly—make sure someone remembers to bring the cake.
